To simulate Hell?
To simulate the buildings falling directly down?
To simulate the planes making nose dives to the ground?
Could “they” not think of any good above ground fountain options?
Going to Heaven, conquering amazing hardship, the thought of God’s help which is considered by society as UP?

Is the fountain designed to bring out the most emotion to who sees it? Down is Hell……
The fountain has water cascading over a wall which falls into a pool and then into a middle is a little square which also plummets down!

Seems like a suggestion of Hell to me!
I wonder how the family’s of those that died at Ground Zero think of this?

i dont think it was meant to mean hell or plummeting at all. this tragedy was not only felt in the usa but all around the world and i could never imagine just how the families feel for the loved ones lost. but for me personally ive heard it was meant to be constructed that way so the water cascading down is to represent the tears that flow for all the people lost but we will remember them. this is the sign that yes we must grieve but me must also move forward. the water is to save our tears from falling upon our faces but a place to come and have the water do it for us where the loved ones are not at rest but in spirit. i think its a beauitiful site and id come all the way form australia to see it. i truly would.
its also meant to represent that although our tears may fall we do not ourselves and the ones left standing willk rise above the water and it will not bring us down with it. and nobody will bring thew heart and soul of new york and usa and the whole world down.
I think that it’s pretty. The symbolism of tears is interesting too. I think that if they wanted to rebuild something that was destroyed by hate into something beautiful, that is all the explanation I need.
